Grooming Reports 2019-2020
2019-2020 Season Summary:
Dates of Operation: December 1, 2019 to March 5, 2020
Season length: 95 days (13 weeks 4 days)
Thursday Evening, March 5th
All good things must come to an end!! We were on pace to break a record for the longest ski season at Vallecito (2 days short). Doug got us going with one of the earliest starts in memory, on Dec 1st. We had a fantastic early season snow in December. This proved to be essential since it held us through the whole season, with very little snow in January and February. In the end, an early spring has caused gravel patches which truncated the road just past East Creek, and the hill leading into East Creek. Our groomers did one final groom this morning.
Thanks to all of the groomers and volunteers for a great 95-day season with many excellent fast and smooth days of skiing. Gratitude goes out all around and we’ll see ya next year!
Tuesday Afternoon, March 3
Groomed for skate skiing this morning on the main road and East Creek Road. As usual we applied the grooming teeth to buff up the surface with mixed results (spots "too soft", some "too hard" and some "just right"). Sounds like the “Three bears” are coming out of hibernation for these Spring conditions. Best time to ski is generally 10AM to noon.
Monday Afternoon, March 2nd
We did a Monday morning groom focusing on the skating lanes. According to our groomer, “the base on the trails continues to surprise us with it’s durable persistence". The snow science is that very early season snow on top of relatively warm ground created a layer of ice at the bottom of the snowpack. Whatever the cause, there is still good skiing so get it while you can!
Sunday Mid-day, March 1st
We made it to March. Our groomers did a tag team power groom this morning and the skating lanes are hanging in there. It’s not time to switch to the bike yet or you can ski and bike on the same day. Enjoy it!!
Saturday Evening, Feb 29th
We groomed the road and East Creek this morning. It skied well but softened quickly. It's icy in a few spots, but certainly still skiable. The best skiing seems to be between 10:30 and noon. We’ll groom this morning and this week since the base seems to be holding up.
Friday Afternoon, Feb 28th
Our groomers hit the skate lanes again today to remove the ruts from the previous day and buff up the corn snow. Skiing at mid-day was icy in a couple of spots but otherwise good and East Creek had the best conditions. One of the iciest sections is between the trailhead and Madden corners. We’ve also closed off the campground trails. Enjoy it while it lasts!!
Thursday Afternoon, February 27th
We groomed the skate lanes this morning and the snow groomed nicely. There was a small window of great (skate) skiing right after grooming which is typical for this time of year. The groomers left the classic tracks as is. Enjoy!!
Wednesday Evening, Feb 26th
All trails (except the campgrounds) were groomed today. Skating lanes skied well at mid day. Glad some folks were out to enjoy the mid week skiing.
Tuesday Evening, Feb 25th
We groomed today and scratched up some cold corn snow on the road and E creek. Cold temps (no thaw cycle) are preserving the surface. We’ve stopped grooming in the campgrounds. We'll be playing it day to day from here on out, but we should have some good skiing through at least the 29th. Possible storm early next week might extend us into March.
Monday Evening, Feb 24th
With the new snow and favorable temps our groomers were able to set classic tracks on the main road and East creek this morning. The bottoms of the tracks are still a little icy. All of the skating lanes were also groomed. Campground trails were groomed but are still a little icy. So, we are back, we’re in good shape and it should hold up if temps can remain in the winter range.
Sunday Afternoon, Feb 23rd
We’ve been replenished. 2-3” of wet snow greeted our groomer this morning. The base probably did not freeze last night and luckily it only rained for a few hours. This combo did cause mushy conditions this afternoon especially up East Creek. Another 1” of snow fell after grooming which covered up all of that dirty old snow. No new classic tracks were set today but skiers are skiing in the day old track.
Saturday Morning, Feb 22nd
We reset classic tracks last night and grooming is underway this morning to smooth out ruts from late afternoon skate tracks. It should be good skating and classic skiing this morning.
Friday Evening, Feb 21st
Our Friday morning groomer did a nice job smoothing out the track and stirring up some fresh clean snow from the base. It made for fine mid day skating, which gave way to slush in the afternoon. The classic tracks are getting a little desperate. Spring skiing = icy in the morning and slushy in the afternoon. We’re hoping the delay of this approaching storm will mean snow vs. rain. Good luck to all of the racers at tomorrow’s Langlauf Race at the Durango Nordic Center!!
Thursday Afternoon, Feb 20th
Our groomer hit all the skating lanes this morning. It took several passes to rub out deep ruts from yesterdays late skiers. The surface probably softened again with warm afternoon temps. We’ll see how we fair with rain forecast Saturday then snow Sunday.
Wednesday Evening, Feb 19th
Our groomers hit it this morning and left a smooth hard surface with corn snow and some bite for skis to track nicely. The skiing is very fast and fun. We're getting close to the end of the season and there's still some good skiing to be had. You just have to get your head around all of the dirty snow. We hope local skiers will partake in the Langlauf race this weekend at the Durango Nordic Center (see Events for details).
Tuesday Evening, Feb 18th
We had a hard freeze last night. 20 degrees at 8 AM. We scraped on the skate lanes as much as possible (pretty deep ruts from the late afternooners yesterday) and created some decent skiing. The snow is holding up surprisingly well, considering. Same ole pattern, icy in the morning and slushy in the afternoon. Put a good word in to the snow gods and goddesses that we’ll get snow (not rain) out of this next system.
Monday Afternoon, Feb 17th
It was 40 degrees when the groomer arrived at 9AM this morning. It is unclear whether the surface froze last night. It was groomed and the skating looked okay with the skiers getting some glide and not sinking in too far. The classic tracks have held up surprisingly well but they are icy. Its getting pretty slushy and soupy out there. Let’s hope we get some colder night time temps to protect our base.
Sunday Evening, February 16th
We groomed again today and the cloud cover moderated afternoon temps into the low 40 degree range. We’ll be out again tomorrow to groom the skating lanes for the holiday skiers. This is Spring skiing. That means conditions are icy in the morning and slushy in the afternoon. Classic tracks are messy but still skiable, especially around mid-day. We’re thankful for all the early season snow, since our base is holding up but and some thin sections are emerging under the thicker trees.
Saturday Afternoon, February 15th
The skiing was icy this morning. We groomed around noon today and the mid-day skiers were treated to some smooth conditions, which quickly gave way to a slushier surface in the afternoon. This is the Spring skiing pattern. Its been several weeks without snow to speak of and the groomers have made the best of it. Groomers tend to hit the trail around mid-morning on Sundays. Go enjoy.
Friday Night, Feb 14th
We set new classic tracks up East creek earlier this evening. Groomers will return to tidy up the skate lanes late Sat morning. The skate skiing was great today and it is holding up despite a return to warm temps in the afternoon. One strategy is to ski before noon and then seek the shade on the campground trails as temps rise in the afternoon.
Thursday Evening, February 13th
Cold temps greeted our groomer crew this morning. They groomed all trails except the campground trails which were still in good shape. The track is hard, icy in some spots, hard powder in others and the skiing is fast. Classic tracks are hanging in there. Good skiing is in store for our Friday skiers. Happy Valentines Day.
Wednesday Evening, Feb 12th
Two groomers hit the trails this morning and smoothed out all of the skating lanes. The classic tracks, that we set yesterday, are holding up nicely. The skiing is good despite our dirty/sun baked snow.
Tuesday Evening, Feb 11th
We were hoping for more but we got a 1/2” of new snow today. A groomer focused on re-setting classic tracks on the FS road and East Creek, and with 33 deg temps, he had some pretty good results. Our snow is getting a little dirty and thin under the trees. We need a collective snow dance.
Sunday Evening, Feb 9th
Two groomers were able to smooth out the hard surface which made for great fast skating today. Conditions vary from icy sections to a softer surface. Classic tracks are pretty worn out. Today’s afternoon cloud cover prevented high temps, so skating could remain good for tomorrow. Remember last year at this time when we got some really big storms? The forecast doesn’t look to repeat that pattern but maybe these weak storms will give us something more to work with.
Saturday Evening, Feb 8th
A solo groomer touched up the skating lanes this morning. The skiing was fast and a little icy in the morning and slowed with warming temps in the afternoon (in the T-shirt range). This means icy conditions for tomorrow morning especially in the sunniest sections. Groomers are scheduled to come out mid-morning to tame the hard pack. The classic tracks are marginal, yet the classic die hards are still kicking and gliding. Hopefully winter will make a come back this week. We’ll see.
Friday evening, Feb 7th
The skating was fantastic today thanks to the amazing grooming efforts this week to break up the frozen crust layer and harvest underlying snow. Mid-week cold temps helped preserve the skiing surface but it did get warm again today in the afternoon especially in sunny sections. Groomers were out later this afternoon and tonight and they were able to groom the skate lanes. This was our classic track A team and much to their disappointment they were not able to complete their mission due to mechanical problems with our track setter. Regardless it should be great skating tomorrow (Sat) with rising temps in the afternoon.
Thursday, afternoon, Feb 6th.
Vallecito skating lanes were groomed again today. That’s three days in a row of grooming. We’re using the teeth on our grooming equipment to scour the surface and work in the new snow from earlier in the week. The groomers said the skiers seemed happy.
Wednesday, mid-day, Feb 5th
1/2” of new new snow greeted our two groomers this morning. They worked on the skating lanes and were able to add “a little fuzz to the surface”. That’s fancy groomer lingo. There was not enough new snow to reset classic tracks which were set yesterday and the skiers have already skied the new snow into the tracks. Enjoy!!
Tuesday mid-day, February 4th
We got about 2" of new snow this morning and we groomed all for skate and classic. We tried to mix the new snow with the old hard pack and had mixed results. Some classic tracks came out OK and some were a little chunky and thin due to underlying layer. A fresh crop of new pine needles and pine cones came down with the big winds last night. It started snowing again when the groomers were half-way done and had maybe another inch of snow on top of some of our grooming. So in the end, the current conditions may not be up to the same “world cup” rating it has been for the last month, but it is surprisingly good given that, as of yesterday, it was icy and bulletproof.
Sunday Morning, Feb 2nd
It is a Super Ski Sunday at Vallecito!! We groomed yesterday and a crew is planning to be out again today. Once again, the skating should be fast and smooth. The classic tracks are getting a little wide and glazed. Warming afternoon conditions could make Monday morning a little icy. Keep your fingers crossed for this next storm—it’s time.
Saturday Morning, February 1st
Welcome to February!! Two groomers are out on the trails as of 9AM on Saturday. They will brush up the skating lanes. The skating should be fantastic. We are not sure if there is enough fresh snow to reset the classic tracks which are just starting to get a little icy. Please remember to hold on to your dogs as the groomers pass. Thanks and hopefully we have some snow coming this week.
Thursday Evening, January 30th
1” of new snow this morning. Our groomers were out on the trails yesterday and today and they groomed everything for skating. The classic tracks are holding up nicely. Happy Snowdown!!
Monday, Afternoon, January 28th
Our groomers were out this morning with 0 degree temps and they worked in the 2" new snow from yesterday. All trails were groomed for skate and classic. Classic tracks came out a little variable with icy places coming out thin but overall a big improvement from the old icy track. It should be good mid week skiing.
Sunday, Afternoon, January 26th
Two groomers hit all of the skate lanes this morning including the campgrounds. Lots of people waving and thanking the groomers. Nice to have that level of support. Warm temps created some soft sections in sunny areas by afternoon. Classic tracks are holding up but starting to get a little glazed in the sunniest spots. Maybe a little snow this week will give us a refresh. Great skiing was had today.
Friday Eve, January 24th
Two groomers were out at sunset and they groomed all of the skating lanes. Classic tracks are holding up well, so they held off resetting the track. We think they hit the perfect temperature window, so things should firm up nicely over night and will be fast and smooth for tomorrow. Enjoy these great mid winter conditions.
Thursday Eve, January 23rd
Our two groomers hit all of the skate lanes including most of the campground trails. Skate skiers said the track was fast this morning. Classic tracks are holding up. It so nice to have so many classic tracks running all throughout the campground trails (check em out). A few grateful skiers provided the groomers with treats this morning. Gratitude is in the air.
Wednesday Eve, January 22nd
1'' to 2'' of new snow since grooming yesterday. Two groomers worked all of skate lanes and they set new classic tracks today. The afternoon brought warmer temps up to 40 degrees.
Tuesday, Evening January 21st
2” of new snow and warm conditions greeted our groomers this morning. They groomed all skate lanes and set new classic tracks on main road and E. Creek road. Light snow fell all day (1” additional snow) — almost turning to rain at mid-day (temps 31 degrees). Cooler temps tonight should firm things up.
Monday Eve, January 20th
We worked on the skating lanes this morning and conditions are improving daily. A little more snow is coming. Enjoy the mid week skiing.
Sunday, Evening, January 19th
Big turn out today (a lot happy dogs, skiers, and snowshoers). The skating lanes were groomed midmorning and the skiing surface is getting better and better. Classic tracks remain amazing! Enjoy these prime nordic conditions. Thanks groomers for your hard work.
Saturday, Evening, January 18th
About 5-6" of windblown snow greeted our two groomers at the trailhead this morning. They groomed everything for skating and, at this point, it is a little soft. After one more grooming, it should be back to the fast and smooth snow that we’ve enjoyed this year. Beautiful new classic tracks were set everywhere including all of campground trails. Tomorrow will be excellent day for classic skiing. Don’t mind the healthy crop of pine needles that came with the big wind yesterday-- we’ll bury them as we go.
Friday Evening, January 17th (updated Sat 7 AM)
Wow there were some big winds and blizzard like conditions at Vallecito on Friday and our best guess is that we received at least 6” of new snow. We did not groom Friday. Two groomers texted from the trailhead on Sat morning and they said the road is plowed. They’ll get rolling by probably 7:30am. We normally post grooming reports after grooming is completed, so with planned grooming, anything can happen, so please adjust your expectations and time of arrival (maybe on the later side) accordingly.
Thursday Afternoon, January 16th
All trails were groomed again today and the skiing is great for skating and classic. Enjoy the new snow that is forecast for tonight and tomorrow.
Wednesday Evening (Update), January 15th
We are pleased to report grooming operations have resumed at Vallecito. Two groomers were out on the trails today. All trails were groomed for skating and classic tracks were set on the FS Road and East Creek. Bring on the snow!!
Wednesday, Morning, January 15th
Good news. Snow’s in the forecast. Fixed machines are in the forecast…. stay tuned.
Saturday Evening, January 11th
The trail conditions at Vallecito are as good as they've been all season! We reset classic tracks last night and the classic tracks came out better than the groomer let on. He also moved the tracks over on the FS Road to give the snowshoer’s room on the outside (right side) of the classic tracks. We focused on the skating lanes today and finished with perfect corduroy. The skating is fast and smooth. All good, right? – Well sort of - because at the end of the day our 3rd and final snowmobile went down. So that means the skiing will remain as is for a few days until our other machines are repaired. Best guess is by Tuesday afternoon. Hope you get out there to enjoy the trails while they are in such great shape.
Saturday Morning, January 11th
Vallecito was groomed last night. We reset some of the classic tracks, which went well in places with softer snow. However, firm conditions from the trailhead to Madden Corners prevented us resetting quality tracks in those spots. Cold temps have helped us maintain very good skiing overall. A few adventurous skiers and dogs enjoyed a full-moon outing last night.
Thursday, January 9th
We’re still operating with one snowmobile but due to the lack of big snow dumps we are getting by. All skate lanes were groomed this morning and skiing is fast with a perfect corduroy finish. Some light snow has fallen since the groomer’s last lap. Snowshoeing conditions are packed snow with a firm surface. Our groomer did have to cope with a dog that was charging the sled. Please help us out and hold on to your dogs before and after encountering grooming equipment. Thanks. Don’t forget about the waxing clinic at Pine Needle this Friday at 5:30. See below for details.
Wednesday, January 8th
Great skiing today at Vallecito. We groomed again today, and the skating is fast and smooth. Classic tracks are holding up as well.
Please join us for this opportunity to learn the basics about nordic waxing at Pine Needle Mountaineering, Friday January 10th at 5:30PM.
Tuesday Afternoon, January 7th
A solo groomer hit the trails early this morning. Our groomers do prefer to work two machines at a time but right now we are down to one working snowmobile, so were are making do. All skate lanes were groomed and in some sections the groomer had to work extra hard to break through the firm surface to erase the heavy traffic from this weekend. You’ll find some sections with smooth corduroy and some sections with a slightly rougher surface. This new skating surface should ski in nicely today and tomorrow on the FS Road and East Creek. No new classic tracks were set but classic tracks improve as you go out the FS Road and are in pretty good shape overall especially in the campground trails. Give the campground trails a try for both skating and classic. Enjoy your mid week skiing and it sounds like some light flurries are forecast towards the end of the week.
Sunday Evening, January 5th
All trails were groomed in the morning in preparation for Demo Days. East and the FS Road were groomed for skating which is fast and smooth. The campground trails offer excellent skiing for classic and skating.

All of the skating lanes were groomed today. We also reset almost all the classic tracks and added some classic tracks on the campground trail. The campground trails are excellent for classic and skating and offer the option for different loops. The skating is fast and smooth once again. Demo Days is tomorrow 9AM-3PM. See “Events” for more information.
FYI. Our volunteer groomers have spent 205 hrs so far this season to make the skiing great at Vallecito. Thank you groomers. We are loving this great skiing!!
Thursday Evening, January 2nd
Vallecito was groomed again today. We hit the skating lanes and no classic tracks were reset. As you can see from this photo (above) of East Creek, the conditions are holding up nicely for both classic and skating. Don’t forget about Demo Days this Sunday. See Events for details.
Wednesday, January 1, 2020
Happy New Year! Happy New Decade!
All skating lanes were groomed including the campground loops. It should be great skiing with a skiff of new on top.
Tuesday, December 31st
Celebrating a month of skiing at Vallecito this season!
There was a problem with one of our snowmobiles - wouldn’t start because of a likely electrical issue. The other snowmobile ran fine and everything was groomed for skating. The classic tracks were reset, pretty much everywhere. They skied great in the afternoon.
With two snowmobiles in the shop grooming will be slower than usual, especially if the New Year’s Day storm materializes.
Demo days are Sunday. We could use a little help. We need one more person at the trailhead table for gear check-out (noon to 3) and one person to help Brett Sublett with clean-up from 2:30 to 4:00. If you would like to help please write John Byrd at: john.byrd@ucdenver.edu
Sunday, December 29th
All the skating lanes were groomed. The classic tracks set Saturday seem to be standing up so were left alone. The skiing will get better and better as the week goes on.
Demo Day is Sunday, January 5th from 9:00 to 3:00. Free Nordic equipment and snowshoe demos from local dealers. Free food while supplies last. Dogs Welcome. Bring photo ID to demo gear. Please pass this on to family and friends.
Saturday Evening, December 28th
Wowza! There is a lot of snow up here. Our two groomers spent the day packing, packing, and more packing to re-establish a new base. The skating lanes are starting to firm up (the best surface is up East Creek which they hit hard with several passes). Campground trails are groomed and they have excellent coverage but remain a little soft. Fresh classic tracks have been set on the FS Road, Burnt Meadow, and E. Creek including Legner Loop. It just keeps getting better!
Friday, December 27th UPDATE
Okay, Vallecito got another 5” last night and more today which means we have received about 2’ of snow since Christmas Eve. A solo groomer was out today and did some packing and set some classic tracks and then he got stuck up East Creek. Such fun! Two groomers are planning to head out tomorrow, but please be patient with us since we are trying to keep up. The road was plowed today at 2PM but more snow has fallen since then.
Thursday Evening, December 26th
About 4-5" of new snow this morning at the trailhead. All trails were groomed for skating including the Campground Trails and Pine Point. Classic tracks were set on FS Road, E. Creek, and Burnt Meadow. The classic skiing is excellent and skating is still a little soft. Lots of folks out today. More snow is forecast.
Christmas, Wednesday, December 25th UPDATE
Santa delivered!! Vallecito got about 10” of snow overnight. Two nordic elves were firing up the sleds and grooming by 10 AM. They rolled and packed the FS Road, East Creek, and about half of the campgrounds. They also set classic tracks on the FS Road and East Creek. Wow those elves were busy…. thank you!! Conditions are a little soft. The Road is plowed. Happy Holidays.
Tuesday, Afternoon, December 24th
Happy Holidays!! New classic tracks were set and all skating lanes were groomed this morning. Keep your ski tips crossed that this storm delivers.
Monday, Evening, December 23rd
Skiing remains fast and smooth. All the skating lanes were groomed today and we left the classic tracks alone since snow is in the forecast. Our groomer did some shoveling at Pine Point campground so hopefully with some snow, we’ll be skiing the campground trails soon.
Sunday, Evening, December 22nd
Our solo Sunday groomer touched up the skate lanes this morning. The skiing remains fast and smooth. Classic track are still good but firming up with warming temps. Lots of smiling faces today, both human and canine.
Saturday, Afternoon, December 21st
Groomers were out at noon today and cleaned up the skate lanes, which are fast and smooth. Classic is still skiing great. Continue to avoid the Campground Trails until we get more snow. Thanks to Doug and others for facilitating the Groomer Training and a special thanks to the groomers for their hard work all season.
Friday, Afternoon December 20th
Happy Solstice!! (well, almost). Two groomers were out this morning and the FS Road and East Creek have a fresh groom. Cold temps have preserved the classic tracks, which were set earlier in the week. We still don’t recommend skiing the campground trails due to thin coverage. So it’s time to get out and enjoy the sun and the great conditions. Snow is forecast for next week. Grooming training is tomorrow at 10AM.
Wednesday, Evening —December 18th
Two groomers hit the trails today. The FS Road and East Creek were groomed for skating. Classic tracks were last set on Monday. Enjoy your mid week ski. Groomer training Sat December 21 at 10AM at the trailhead!! So, if you want to join the community of VNC groomers, please come join us.
Please spread the word about our new website: VallecitoNordicClub.org
Monday, Evening— December 16th
We received a pulse of 2” dry, cold, snow on Sunday night as our weekend system departed. Our Monday groomer worked his magic on East Creek and the FS Road and set new classic tracks. The Pine Point loop was also groomed and shoveled and please use caution on the northern down hill section due to thin coverage. Hey, this is starting to look a bit like winter!! So get out there and enjoy the weekday skiing.
Saturday Evening -- December 14th
1-2” of new snow greeted our groomers this morning. The FS Road and East Creek groomed up beautifully for skating and classic and they both have great coverage. Continue to avoid the campground trails, until we get more snow. More snow is forecast tonight and tomorrow.
Groomer training Sat December 21 at 10AM at the trailhead!! So, if you want to join the community of VNC groomers, come check it out.
Friday, Afternoon, December 13th
The FS road offers a smooth skating surface between the trailhead and Pine Point. Watch for lurking rocks and thin coverage at the bottom of East Creek, on the west side of Legner Loop, and at the end of the FS road. Let's hope the current snowfall remains as snow. A big thank you to Doug for rallying on hauling the grooming gear to the trailhead during Thanksgiving. This has allowed for one of our earliest start-ups in years.
December 11th, 2019
Today we groomed the FS Road and East Creek, which are well covered and skiing well! Classic tracks are holding up too and were last set on Monday. Campground trails are thin and should be avoided for the time being. Enjoy the mid week skiing.
December 9th, 2019
Welcome to winter!! Our groomers hit the trails this morning to work in the 3” of additional snow that fell Sunday night. This snow along with the 3” of wet snow from Saturday is contributing to an excellent base. The FS road and East Creek are looking good for skating. Classic tracks were set on the FS road and East creek, all of which should set up nicely overnight. Campground trails should be avoided until the next snowfall. Enjoy.
December 8, 2019
Sunday grooming will start late morning, 10-ish.
December 6, 2019 · Yes, Vallecito Nordic is open! We got a couple of inches of additional snow this week. On Friday morning, we groomed the FS road, East Creek, and we set classic tracks on the FS road. Watch out for visible rocks up East Creek and at the end of the FS road. Early season conditions still exist but the FS road is remarkably good for Dec 6th. We apologize for our website being down and hope it will be up and running soon.
December 1, 2019
A few inches of base have allowed us to prep and groom the FS road. It is very "early season" conditions. But it is skiable! Please use caution. Coverage is thin.
And so it begins....
